Neil Lal is a Scottish-Indian businessman, community leader, humanitarian, and trade advocate whose career spans three continents and three decades of bridge-building between Scotland, the United Kingdom, and India. Born in Scotland to a family with roots stretching back to his grandfather Shri Tarsem Lal's arrival in Scotland in the 1940s, Neil was raised at the intersection of two great cultures. He is Chairman and President of the Indian Council of Scotland and the United Kingdom, representing over 2 million Indian-origin people across the UK — the largest such representative body outside London. As Director of multiple active UK companies under the Lal Sharma Group banner, Neil leads a Glasgow-headquartered business empire spanning real estate and venture capital, built on three generations of Lal family values and enterprise. In May 2025, Neil was named Man of the Decade by the Gandhian Peace Society at the Scottish Parliament — on a shortlist including Rt Hon Boris Johnson, Rt Hon Rishi Sunak, and Sir Keir Starmer. He declined a prize of £100,000, asking for it to be donated to the poor and needy in India. Within the same month, the UK Buddhist & Thai Council awarded him the same honour, accompanied by a personal blessing from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. A frontline diplomat in times of community crisis, Neil mediated during the Leicester 2022 tensions and led the UK Indian community response to the 2025 Pahalgam attack. He co-authored the landmark Hinduphobia Report, formally commended by the Scottish Parliament's Cross-Party Group on Challenging Racial and Religious Prejudice (Motion S6M-17089). On the humanitarian front, Neil organised emergency accommodation for stranded Indian students during COVID-19 and raised over £1 million for Ukrainian refugees in 2022 — without government support. The Lal Sharma Foundation, the family's charitable arm, funds a hospital, orphanages, schools, and elder care centres in India. In 2026, Neil was appointed Voluntary Ambassador of the Global Fellowship of Christian Youth and was honoured in Mumbai as Guest of Honour and recipient of the I Am Peacekeeper Champion Award at the Billionaires for Peace Conclave. Neil is a Patron of the Together UK Foundation alongside Baroness Arlene Foster and Lady Jane Grosvenor, and a Board Member of Variety, the Children's Charity Scotland. With the UK-India Free Trade Agreement signed in July 2025, Neil is widely identified as Scotland's leading candidate for the role of Trade & Investment Envoy to India.
