COVID-19: No Student Left Behind

When the pandemic forced universities to close and international travel stopped overnight, thousands of Indian students across the UK found themselves stranded. University accommodation was closing. Support systems were overwhelmed. Many had nowhere to go.

Neil Lal mobilised the Indian community in Scotland with urgency and purpose. He arranged emergency accommodation in Glasgow for stranded students, coordinated food supply chains across the city, and provided practical and emotional community support at a time when many young people felt forgotten by institutions.

No government funding was sought. No press releases were issued at the time. The work was simply done.

2022

Ukraine: £1 Million Raised, 1,000 Beds Secured

Emergency relief, Scotland & Poland

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the humanitarian need was immediate and vast. Neil Lal did not wait for government.

Despite repeated requests to the Scottish Government for support — requests that were not met — Neil raised over £1 million from the Indian community in Scotland and his business network. He secured 1,000 beds in Scotland and Poland for Ukrainian refugees.

He sent containers of clothing, sleeping bags, and emergency food packs directly into Ukraine and through the Poland distribution network. He coordinated with Polish refugee centres and Ukrainian community organisations to ensure supplies reached people who needed them.

The scale of what was achieved — without government support — reflects what a committed, connected community leader can do when others are still filling out forms.

Lal Sharma Foundation: A Legacy of Service

India — Healthcare, Education, Community

Built on the foundation of three generations of the Lal family, the Lal Sharma Foundation carries the family's deepest values into India.

The Foundation funds a hospital in India — providing healthcare to people who could not otherwise access it. It supports orphanages, giving children without families a safe home and an education. It funds schools in rural areas where state provision falls short. It runs elder care centres. It supports rural healthcare projects that reach communities where doctors rarely go.

This work is not seasonal. It is not event-driven. It is year-round, quiet, and sustained by the conviction that wealth carries an obligation.
